Erick Schultz, Winemaker

Erick, what is the inspiration behind Papio Wines?

I have always believed that wine has a personality, a soul. A winemaker's job is to give the wine's soul its best expression. Papio was created while blending wine and listening to jazz, the ultimate soul music.

What's the connection?

Well, as I was blending separate lots of Merlot, listening to a mix of my favorite musicians - Miles Davis, Jamiroquai, Ella Fitzgerald, Moby - I realized that what I love about jazz is how each individual brings something of themselves to the music. They speak to each other, respond to each other, define their own unique harmony.

It's the same with wine. You want each component to contribute something unique to the blend, so that the whole transcends the sum of its parts. You want the right amount of fruit and sweetness balanced by natural acidity. You want good texture to support the flavors without the oak taking over.

What do the wines taste like?

Papio wines are all about fruit. Our 2004 Chardonnay has bright flavors of crisp pineapple, citrus, and tropical fruit with juicy, balanced flavors and a refreshing finish. Our 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon has distinctive berry and black cherry character, with jazz hints of lavender and spice. Our 2004 Merlot has lush plum and red cherry character, with an easy-to-love soft, smooth texture. I’m currently blending our newest varietal, Pinot Grigio, that will be in stores in early 2006. Our 2005 Pinot Grigio has luscious citrus and melon flavors, and is a refreshing addition to the Papio family.

What do monkeys have to do with wine?

Papio’s name is taken from the Latin word for baboon, so we decided to honor its namesake by helping to protect primates and their natural African habitats. Since Papio first launched, it has partnered with the African Wildlife Foundation to protect some of Africa ’s most treasured primates, such as the chimpanzee, golden monkey, mountain gorilla and bonobo, along with their habitats. I believe it’s important to support wildlife and habitat conservation and I’m proud of Papio’s partnership with the AWF.

Monkeys are such playful, sociable animals. They’re a great reminder of what wine should be all about: having fun!

CHEERS,
Erick Schultz
